Not at all! We welcome riders of all levels, from absolute beginners to experienced equestrians looking to refine their skills. Our personalized instruction meets you where you are and helps you grow.
We welcome young riders starting at 5 years old. At this age, children usually have the attention span and physical coordination to start learning safely and effectively. There's no maximum age limit—riding is a fantastic activity for adults of all ages too!
For your comfort and safety please wear; long pants to keep the saddle from chaffing, riding or paddock boots to keep your foot from getting stuck in the stirrup, and a helmet required. We have helmets available to borrow for your first few lessons, but eventually, you'll want to get your own ASTM/SEI certified riding helmet.
Our lessons are one hour in length. Please arrive 15 minutes early and allow for 15 minutes after your scheduled lesson time. This includes dedicated time for catching, grooming, tacking your horse, mounted instruction, cooling down, untacking, and turnout. Always ensuring a comprehensive and educational experience both on and off the horse. That's 30 minutes of free hands-on horse time!
We understand that life happens! We kindly ask for 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson. Regarding late arrivals: We appreciate a quick heads-up if you anticipate being late, please notify us as soon as possible. While we'll do our best to accommodate your arrival, please understand that your lesson will conclude at the scheduled time. You will receive instruction for the remaining time and the full lesson fee will still apply. Horse care and horsemanship are year-round activities! If mounted riding isn't safe due to weather (like heavy rain or extreme temperatures), we switch to fun and educational unmounted lessons. These cover valuable topics like advanced grooming, tack care, horse anatomy, barn management, and more—ensuring your learning continues regardless.
Yes, we welcome trailer-in students for lessons, and we can also come to your location! Please contact us to discuss scheduling and any specific requirements for your horse. A Coggins test will be required.
We offer flexible lesson options to suit your learning style and schedule. All new riders typically begin with a private lesson to build foundational skills and assess their current level. After this initial private lesson, you can choose to continue with private instruction or move into an open group class where students scheduled at the same time can ride together.
Absolutely! We highly encourage prospective students and their families to come visit The Backyard Barn Waxhaw. It's a great way to see our facility, meet some of our wonderful horses, and get a feel for our welcoming environment. Absolutely! We actively support our students' ambitions in the show ring and beyond. For Show Preparation: If you're interested in competing, we offer comprehensive preparation which includes lessons,attending clinics, and providing show day coaching and guidance on navigating the show environment. Our goal is to equip you with the skills and confidence to succeed. For Event Participation:We also believe in broadening our students' equestrian experience. Throughout the year, typically on Saturdays, we attend exciting outings like local open shows, foxhunting, and when we can't compete, we go to other equestrian sports to support the lifestyle and gain valuable insight. These offer real-world experience and build camaraderie. We aim to make showing and event participation a fun, educational, and rewarding for all our students. Yes, absolutely! We have a designated viewing area where onlookers are welcome to observe lessons. We just ask that you stay quiet and calm in this area to avoid distracting the horses or riders and help us maintain a safe and focused learning environment.
